FASHION INTERVIEWS // LOVE AND MORE / PANOS YIAPANIS / BY KATHARINE K. ZARRELLA
You can’t miss a Panos Yiapanis photograph. Since beginning his career in the late nineties—working alongside photographer Corinne Day—the 38-year-old stylist has honed a dark, gritty, raw-to-the-bone aesthetic that is distinctly his own. His particular vision has led to a longstanding creative relationship with Rick Owens, as well as countless spreads in such magazines as i-D, W, and Vogue Italia shot by the likes of Steven Meisel, Inez & Vinoodh, and Mert & Marcus. To add to his accomplishments, last week, Katie Grand tapped him to become Love’s fashion director-at-large. Here, Yiapanis talks to Style.com about the new gig, the state of fashion, and staying true to his look.

PHONE Q&A BETWEEN CARINE ROITFELD AND WWD
Who will succeed Carine, as Editor-in-Chief of Vogue Paris?
No one knows yet. Not even Carine her self. Though fingers are being pointed at French Vogue’s fashion director, Emmanuelle Alt, Roitfeld’s right-hand woman. She's not in the process of naming a successor.
When did the thought come about, to Carine, to leave, and why is she leaving?
She had been mulling the decision since summer, and was leaving on a high note after French Vogue’s 90th anniversary issue in October.
"In two months, it will be 10 years since I joined Vogue. When we published our 90th anniversary issue in October, it felt almost like a double anniversary for me. I knew I wasn’t really going to stay much longer. I think it’s good to get out while you’re ahead, and I think right now, Vogue is outstanding. I’m very proud of it. I have an exceptional team.
I have always been a freelancer, so when I was hired 10 years ago, I found it very difficult to have an office, an assistant, a schedule, fixed vacations. But at the same time, it was such a huge job that I said yes. It’s been an incredible adventure, but maybe in my heart and soul, I am more of a freelancer. I’m surprised I even stuck it out this long, but what made me stay is having a boss like Jonathan [Newhouse], who is an incredible man who gave me total freedom, and God knows I pushed the boundaries."
