WRAPPED COAST

The Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s monumental 1969 art project, which wrapped 2.4 kms of Sydney's coastline in one million square feet of fabric, was the main inspiration and also the starting point of Kym Ellery´s S/S 2016. The collection experimented with abstract Australian prints and metallic fabrics, achieving the effect of reflecting ripples on water at night. There were still enough level of drama, mostly made by peplum pieces, brand´s trademark, but overall was more wearable than ever.

TRUE ELLERY

To be able to describe Ellery´s woman for Resort 2016 in a short way possible, would be like that: Seventies vibe, with Anita Pallenber as the main inspiration and loads of brand´s signature details, like ruffles and volume. Believe it or not, it was Pallenberg´s interest in witchcraft the major focus for Kym Ellery while making the collection. That explains teddy bear pieces* or velvet slip-dresses mixed and matched more than perfectly in the whole collection; as usual, very Ellery one, always true to herself. Especially in love with the “opening” looks, composed by ruffled jackets and trapeze-like knee-length trousers, off-the shoulder gowns and crisp shirts.

TO DRESS

Perth-born designer Kym Ellery was inspired by Austrian painter Egon Schiele for her F/W 2015/2016 collection; actually her point was to make the wardrobe for painter´s famous nudes. Sounds surreal, but she literally printed the paintings on paper and made sketches on them, like dressing them. The result is a combo of volume, tailoring and texture; oversize coats, A-line dresses,  bell-shaped pants and sleeves of the tops in sleek, but also heavy fabrics, enriched time to time with brocade. Elements and details, like metallic fringes on a front of a strapless dress and top, or the ceramic glazed buttons, that adorned jackets and coats, hand-made by Ellery´s mother Debra, elevated the whole story into a higher level. I doubt that Schiele´s dishabille women wouldn´t appreciate. And they are not the only one.

STRONG, SIMPLE AND BEAUTIFUL

Strong, sculptural but simple, with an athletic mix-to Asian-inspired vibe and overall chic-ness, this is how I could in most short way describe Ellery´s Resort 2014. From wide and a bit cropped pajama pants, short-boxy leather shorts and cropped tops to exquisite prints with patterns inspired by Kim Ellery´s mother wedding. It is quite difficult to write while you just want to sit down and stare to this beautiful collection. There are no need to add more words, because I guess it´s quite enough to see sparkle in the eyes after you look on it. Is there also a need to say that I want some pieces from this collection in my wardrobe?
Ellery, you got me!
