The film is Luca Guadagnino’s adaptation of William S. Burroughs’s semi-autobiographical novel of the same title, which serves as a sort of sequel to his groundbreaking 1953 work, Junkie. Although written in the early 1950s, Queer wasn’t published until 1985, when it swiftly became a classic within both the Beat and LGBTQ literature genres.
Daniel Craig portrays Burroughs’s alter ego, William Lee, a World War II veteran residing in late-1940s Mexico City, living off part-time jobs and his GI Bill benefits. William becomes immersed in a bar scene populated by American gay expatriates and college students. He develops feelings for a younger man named Eugene Allerton, inspired by Burroughs’s actual love interest, fellow veteran Adelbert Lewis Marker.
Alongside Craig, Drew Starkey (Outer Banks) takes on the role of the young Allerton.
Among Daniel Craig, the cast includes Jason Schwartzman, Lesley Manville, Omar Apollo, and Henrique Zaga.
Queer had its global and US premieres at the Venice Film Festival and the New York Film Festival. It will be shown in select US theatres on November 27 and worldwide on December 13.
