It is not just a probably, but it is (big) definitely one of the most anticipated film projects coming into life this year that will have its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival. I am talking about The Room Next Door ( in Spanish: La habitación de al lado), Pedro Almodóvar 's first English-language feature film, a melodrama based on the book What Are You Going Through by Sigrid Nunez, in which the Spanish director explores the friendship between women, one of the core topics in his films.
According to the official synopsis, it is about a profoundly imperfect mother, Martha, a war reporter played by Tilda Swinton and a resentful daughter torn apart by an enormous misunderstanding. Between them, there is another woman, Ingrid, an autofiction novelist, played by Julianne Moore.
The two women were close friends in their youth, continuing also during the time they worked together at the same magazine, but after they separated because of the circumstances of life. After years of being out of touch, they meet again in a very unusual but strangely sweet situation.
In Spanish theaters on October 18.
