Malin + Goetz store, New York
We have long had a loyal allegiance to New York beauty brand Malin+Goetz, and welcomed the opening of its third boutique worldwide with open arms. Known for its inimitable union of style and substance, founders Matthew Malin and Andrew Goetz have opted for Manhattan’s understated Upper West Side for their newest outpost.
The store stands on the corner of Amsterdam Avenue and 82nd Street, which is known locally as ‘le gran esquina’ (the big corner.) Like its two other apothecaries in Chelsea, Manhattan and Osaka, Japan, the new space bears its own neighbourhood trademark. As this space was previously occupied by a Puerto Rican barbershop, Malin+Goetz have retained the original barbershop sign, in tribute to the location’s heritage.
On the inside, a melting pot of components co-exists. Neoclassical walnut panels salvaged from a demolished Long Island mansion are juxtaposed with the clinical white counter and features first seen in the Chelsea store. Brooklyn-based architect Craig Konyk is responsible for the eclectic revamp. While the idiosyncratic features of the interior help to frame and divide the space, they also emphasise the Victorian building’s original tin ceiling and brick foundation, making this store a must for any Malin+Goetz devotee.
