Comme des Garçons S/S 2010 / PFW / Day four

When most designers show a collection with a low news quotient, one assumes the lightbulb just didn’t go on this season. When the designer is Rei Kawakubo, it’s tempting to ponder the message behind the lack of message. But maybe even she needs a little rejuvenation time now and then, or maybe she decided to let the rest of the pack catch up to last season’s amazing gentility-meets-military outing. For whatever, reason, her spring collection for Comme des Garçons felt surprisingly familiar, and not only because she again touched on sheer and army fatigues, putting her in unfamiliar territory — on trend. Kawakubo’s major motifs, however, were collages, with skirts and jackets crafted from fragments of other garments, rendered with leather harnesses strapped on over the clothes, including some gently gauzy layers, for the look of a milkmaid giving bondage a try.
