Wintle S/S 2010 / LFW

Russian-born but London-based Jsen Wintle enjoys the billionaire backing of Evgeny Lebedev, son of a Russian oligarch and owner of the London Evening Standard, and so has also enjoyed a lot of attention in his short career. But he is more than simply a curiosity: his collection for Marks & Spencer is in store now and has gained plaudits all round. So not surprisingly his show at London fashion week was well attended and the expectations were high.

The collection showed a cool understatement that is unusual compared to the self-consciously fashion-forward madness that is the London norm. Pleated city shorts came in dusty pinks, slate blues and cool greys paired with neat one-button jackets, while cotton suits were dip-dyed so the pinks and the blues subtly faded as the eye travelled down. Knitwear was super-fine, and worn as sheer cardigans or as a scooped-neck pullover with an inset shirtfront and cuffs. This wasn't about fashion fireworks - the word for Wintle is wearable and next spring will see a lot of men wanting him in their wardrobe.
