Tom Sherbourne (Michael Fassbender), a lighthouse keeper, and his wife Isabel (Alicia Vikander) are living on a remote Australian island where both enjoy their wedded bliss. After a wonderful time of togetherness Isabel becomes pregnant. Only short time later she suffers a miscarriage, followed by other strokes of fate. For the pair a world breaks down. One day the mourning Isabel discovers a boat rinsed on a shore with a dead man and a loud two-month old baby aboard. With the knowledge that there can still exist the baby´s real mother, the couple decide to adopt the child as their own. But as the child grows older, they discover the consequences of passing off the child as their own, especially after they meet a woman (Rachel Weisz), who lost her baby daughter and husband at sea around the same time Tom and Isabel adopted their child.
This is an upcoming 2016 American drama-film written and directed by Derek Cianfrance (Blue Valentine) that is based on the novel of same name written by M.L. Stedman.
The film is scheduled to be released by Touchstone Pictures on September 2, 2016
