Inspiration tear


On the difficulties of growing up and being "different": "My middle school years were filled with countless tears and threats. I remember my mom consolling me one day after I was shoved into a locker by members of the football team and told I would burn in hell with the rest of the faggots by a classmate's father. She told me, 'Honey, with small towns come small minds with small lives and small views. What’s inside your heart and your mind is bigger than this entire town.' I'll never forget those words."

When Hunter was a teen, his mother enrolled him in a high school called Middle College, which was designed for students who didn't "fit" the typical high school mold. "My life instantly changed. Rather than being shot down for wearing 'weird clothing' or having tattoos or wearing makeup, it was embraced. Every inch of my creativity was loved and cared for."

"In my English class [in high school], we were required to read a book called 'The Power of Now.' That book sealed the deal. Still, to this day, I make people read it. It was this school and this book that finally at the age of 18 helped me admit to my entire class, as well as my family, that I was gay."

"Upon graduation [from high school], I was hired by my father to be the assistant wardrobe stylist for European pop star Anastacia [on her] five-month European tour. It was this tour that opened my eyes to fashion and design and architechture. When we hit the Scandanavian countries, my obsession with darker elements kicked in. The constant darkness, the cold weather, the layering."

Hunter found these women's pants at a thrift store. They are actually a skirt/pant combo (there are two panels that hang down in the front and the back), but sometimes Hunter ties the skirt flaps around his legs to look like a sash.

"[After high school,] I decided to enroll myself into cosmotology school," says Hunter. "I completed the grueling 1500 hours required, failed my test, and realized quickly that being a hairstylist just wasn't for me. I needed a change, I needed something inspiring. I needed New York."

"I stand at my job for nine hours a day and I move around alot, so comfort became something that I was interested in. If I can't put my hands in my pockets comfortably or wrap myself up in something cozy, I'm uninterested."

Hunter's Chloe Edith Bag was a high school graduation gift

Hunter says of his first tattoo, a To-Do List: "I do write in it and use it. It comes in handy."

"For the longest time I wanted a poncho and couldn't find one, so I just got a big black blanket and wore it as a scarf."

Currently, I am finding myself inspired by Japanese designers Miharayasuhiro and Attachment by Kazuyuki Kumagai. Chances are, if the garment is black and has a good drape, I'm sold."

Hunter's all black wardrobe is a result of working in salons where all black every day is de rigueur. He works at Bumble and Bumble in New York.

"Yohji Yamamoto, in my opinion, understands how to make something so oversized have beautiful structure. I am also incredibly fond of Comme des Garcons, Damir Doma, and Ann Demeulemeester. I, however, cannot afford such luxury, so I have to be creative."
