Natalia Brilli must be wishing for Autumn/Winter 09 to be over, so that the fashion bandwagon can move on from its’ current black leather obsession. Over the last few years the Belgian-born designer has developed a whole brand based on her unique approach to the material, utilising a traditional Franch couture technique called “gainage”.
The technique involves encasing objects in a fine skin of leather, fitted so snugly that the smallest details pop out - the ID number on a credit card on a simple wallet, or the profile of a nail scissors in the lining of a vanity case.
While this could so easily end up feeling fetish-y, Brilli’s rigorous, muted approach actually feels incredibly sensual but restrained. (Even when it comes to the entire skeleton rock band she created last year - currently touring stores across the world - with every bone, instrument and detail painstakingly shrouded!)
