Fair Isle Knits

Text by Luke Raymond

My name is Luke and I am addicted to Fair Isle knits. I have to confess to owning my...ahem…fair share of knits, having overdosed on the ease of oversized jumpers, jeans and boots last winter. Currently on a shopping ban, I’m trying to revitalise the contents of my wardrobe for the impending shift in seasons and Christopher Bailey’s inclusion of Fair Isle knits in the Burberry Prorsum A/W09 menswear show has provided me with ample inspiration.

Bailey utilised the knit in longer length patchwork pieces but, perhaps most interestingly and most attainably for me, in the cummerbund. Under Bailey’s capable hands the folksy, traditional knit was smartened up, transforming sober suiting with a natural touch.

It’s the perfect way to give a nod to autumn without roasting on the tube and I’m going to be chopping up a certain cardigan into a wide cummerbund-style strip, hemming the edges and flinging it on over absolutely everything.
