Paper Fashion

Text by Vicki Loomes

As a child I was obsessed with paper, spending hours making odd, unrecognisable creatures out of papier-mâché and creating my own paper, which was bound, rather badly, into books and forced onto unsuspecting friends and relatives. My love affair with this most basic form still persists, and I can often be found in bookshops and art shops just stroking…tracing paper is a particular favourite. But I digress.

It seems I am not alone in this obsession, however. If you happen to be in Antwerp anytime soon the Paper Fashion exhibition at the Mode Museum should not be missed- taking a collection of 1960’s paper dresses as a starting point the exhibition focuses on the use of paper and similar materials within fashion.

This reminded me of the multi talented Petra Storrs (art director/costume designer/set and prop designer extraordinaire), particularly her fabulous video with Paloma Faith ‘In All The World I Dream In Paper’, a whimsical and beautiful piece of i-stop motion. I also love her black and white paper creations for Sublime magazine- life-size origami that must have taken hours to create- I wish I had that kind of patience.
