Gemma Slack appeared on the fashion radar rather abruptly- announced as a new addition to London Fashion Week just a few days before the fashion circus rolled into town. Her AW09 collection, based on beasts and Nosferatu combined hand-moulded leather dresses, digital smoke-prints and velvet motorbike jackets, was remarkably self-assured and polished, showing no signs of last minute panics. Strong, sleek, tailored and tough- these are designs that need to be worn with a certain kind of attitude.
Gemma, who was born and raised in Sheffield, originally enrolled at the Chelsea College of Art and Design to study Fine Art. After being encouraged to experiment with fashion design she transferred to the London College of Fashion, where she graduated with a first class honours degree. Following a two-year stint with Gareth Pugh, Gemma debuted her first collection in SS09- mixing merino wool with tulle, leather with metal washers-merely hinting at what was to follow.
We fired some quick questions at Gemma to try and discover some more about this enigmatic designer.
I became a fashion designer because…I didn’t know what else to do.
My AW 09/10 collection is…nearly last season.
Showing at London Fashion Week…was very surreal.
I'm always inspired by…the human body.
I would love to collaborate with…Hussein Chalayan
Luxury is…overstated.
I'm looking forward to…my next drink.
This summer I will be…hot and sweaty.
At the moment I'm listening to…Ridley Road market, setting up.
I can't live without…constantly embarrassing myself.
I always wear…black underwear.
I admire…anyone who own Balenciaga.
If I wasn't a fashion designer…I would be rich.
When I have a day off I…have no idea, I don't really have days off.
My favourite place in London is…my flat.
Marmite is…something I haven't tried in ages.
